An explanation
of "homeopathic" remedies
Medicines
which are available in the dilutions used by homeopaths are sold as
"homeopathic remedies". This is not strictly true - they are
only homeopathic when they have been chosen carefully to match the symptoms
experienced by the taker. However, they are made in the manner stipulated
first by Hahnemann and then by other homeopaths over the last 200 years.
Potency
In this
context "potency" refers to the style and number of dilutions
involved in the making of the remedy. If you are buying remedies over
the counter at Boots, Holland and Barrett or similar outlets, you are
likely to see the name of the remedy [eg. Belladonna] and a number -
"6c" or "30c". These numbers refer to the cycle
of serial dilution of 1:100. "6c" has been diluted 1:100 six
times: "30c" has been diluted 1:100 thirty times.
Variations
of form
You may
buy your remedy in a liquid form or as tablets or as crystals in the
same dilutions. The tablets and crytals are soaked in the medicine and
act as a carrier. Because the remedy is so dilute it is tasteless and
doesn't need a coating to be acceptable.
Dosage
As with
all medicine, the ideal dose is the least that will help to make a change.
This is especailly the case with remedies which have been chosen homeopathically.
Take one pill, one crystal or one drop and wait to see how you are reacting
to the dose. If you notice an improvement, don't repeat the dose until
it wears off [it might not "wear off" - one dose might be
enough!]. Then repeat exactly the same dose. Providing you experience
an amelioration of symptoms each time there is no limit to the number
of doses you can take. You will not experience toxic side effects. Remember
to stop when you feel better.
Advice
on commercially produced remedies
The above
advice is contrary to the instructions which are often found on commercially
produced remedies. Taking two tablets three or four times a day is not
necessary, noticing your own reaction and taking the remedy accordingly
is what works best.
